Scope

This page is strictly for the ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe with a AMD64 Athlon 3000+ processor on a 939 socket. The aim of this wiki is to provide you with the information you need to get the system running.

I will not be using the onboard RAID as RAID5 seems to need windows to work. The Si, and Nvidia raids are software RAID, so it is suggested to just use Linux's native RAID support, if compatibility with Windows is desired, there is a tool to read the RAID's BIOS settings.

Shamelessly used "Tjalfe's Asrock K8 Upgrade-760GX - SIS760GX Chipset" as a template for my first documentation. Thanks Tjalfe.

System components

Hardware Setup

If like me you are not going to use the onboard RAID or at least not the Silicon RAID, plug your SATA disks in the black controllers. The red ones are only used for Silicon RAID.

BIOS Setup

My BIOS Settings: I will only list relevant info so that you can boot. I had a lot of problems getting the system to boot with this board so keep your eyes open...

IDE Function Setup -> Enable All. (I have a IDE CDROM and SATA disks so I want them all enabled).
NVRAID -> Disabled (I do not use the onboard RAID)
Onboard Lan -> Enabled (Enable one or both but be sure to check which one you enabled after booting of the CD with ifconfig)
Sillicon SATA Controller -> Disabled (I do not use the onboard RAID)
I did once have problems booting. There was a problem between what the BIOS saw as the 1st SATA disk and what the kernel thought was the 1st disk. I changed the order of the "Hard disk drives" and it worked like a charm:) At the time I had to put them in the BIOS in the following order: 3rd,1st,2nd,4th.

Installation CD

I downloaded it with bittorrent and burned it to a CD.

Follow the manual

Follow the amd64 installation manual, there is nothing special to do during the installation.

Relevant Kernel Settings

This is from a standard gentoo-sources, kernel (2.6.12-r6). I included what I thought was relevant, let me know if you need more info. I'm not saying it's the perfect setup, just that it works ;)

Getting Sound on SPDIF

To get the SPDIF output working do the following:

 1) Stop alsasound: /etc/init.d/alsasound stop
 2) Edit /etc/asound.state . Find the section IEC958 Playback Switch and sets its value to true.
 3) Also sets IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA to 0
 4) Start alsasound: /etc/init.d/alsasound start

Dont forget to mute master mono in alsamixer as well as set the external amplifer to on. Also Iec958 in the options section must be set to pcm.

USB

Be sure to setup USB correctly. It uses the EHCI_HCD and OHCI_HCD (it will work, sorta with UHCI_HCD, but not correctly!)
