General questions

i386 or amd64?

If in doubt, consult the article HOWTO_AMD64. Personally I use amd64 and feel no lack of comfort.

Setting make.conf

I use Gentoo/amd64 with the following config:

File: make.conf
CFLAGS="-O3 -march=athlon64 -pipe"
CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
MAKEOPTS="-j3"
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~amd64"

Drivers

General Status

As of kernel 2.6.25 everything works OK except built-in microphone. Graphics support is also far from being perfect.

Not tested:

Everything else is pretty evident, the hints will follow only for the things I needed googling for.

Webcam

Internal webcam is supported by [[Ebuild:|]]. As of kernel 2.6.26 the driver is in kernel.

Wi-Fi

BCM4312

See the guide.

IPW3945

I have a model with BCM4312. See the guides for Ipw3945 and Iwlwifi drivers if You happened to have this model.

Framebuffer

I had no success with radeonfb, didn't try other drivers.

X.org

The video device on this laptop is ATi RadeOn Mobility x1270. ATi provides blob-based drivers for its video cards (x11-drivers/ati-drivers), and they work flowlessly.

OpenSource x11-drivers/xf86-video-radeonhd driver as of version 1.2.1 doesn't work. x11-drivers/xf86-video-radeon driver gives poor 2D performance (still better then x11-drivers/xf86-video-vesa) and no 3D acceleration.

Multimedia Keys

Here's my ~/.xmodmaprc:

File: ~/.xmodmaprc
keycode 160 = XF86AudioMute
keycode 174 = XF86AudioLowerVolume
keycode 176 = XF86AudioRaiseVolume
keycode 162 = XF86AudioPlay
keycode 144 = XF86AudioPrev
keycode 153 = XF86AudioNext
keycode 164 = XF86AudioStop
keycode 143 = XF86WWW

You can bind this keys with x11-misc/xbindkeys or Your desktop environement instruments.

Software

Window manager suggestions

The choice of the window manager is always a very personal issue. Still there are some hardware-dependent ideas that could be taken in account while making choice.

The Dell Inspiron 1721 laptop has lots of screen real estate (1920x1200 is nearly 4 times more than 1024x768 screen that is still used somewhere), so the tiling window managers (x11-wm/dwm, x11-wm/wmii, x11-wm/larswm, x11-wm/awesome or x11-wm/xmonad) may be more useful than others.

If You prefer using KDE or GNOME, consider using x11-wm/xmonad) to replace kwm or metacity accordingly.
