HOWTO:Make_a_GRUB_splash-image

Contents

About this HOWTO

This HOWTO will guide you through the steps required to change your default GRUB splash image.

Requirements

You will need a full Linux installation and GRUB.

Altering grub.conf

Open it up in your favourite text editor (you will need root privileges to edit this file)

#nano -w /boot/grub/grub.conf

TIP:Make sure your boot partition is mounted

Your grub.conf should read something like this:

default0

timeout 15

...

You need to add the line

splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz

("(hd0,0)" refers to your boot partition)

TIP:Other Linux operating systems will probally use /boot/grub/menu.lst

Designing your image

The only requirements are that the image is:

1)640x480

2)14 colours

3).xpm format

TIP:You can alter an exsisting image (providing it is not to complex) using gimp. Or you can use image magic to convert it

convert picture.jpg -resize 640x480 -colors 14 ImageName.xpm

Gziping your image

First you need to copy your image to the location you specified in "Altering your grub.conf"

#cp /location/of/image /boot/grub/splash.xpm

Then simply gzip and you're done.

#gzip /boot/grub/splash.xpm

Reboot and enjoy :D
