Polipo

About

Some browsers do not support HTTP pipelining, which means that it feels a lot slower than it could be. A workaround is to use Polipo. It supports pipeling and DNS-Caching.

Install

Code: Install Polipo
emerge -av polipo

Make sure the first entry in your /etc/resolv.conf is working, as otherwise polipo will likely fail to resolve the address instead of trying the next entry due to it's default settings, which you can adjust later.

As the default settings are quite safe (only 127.0.0.1 is allowed to connect) you can already start the proxy with:

Code: Starting polipo
/etc/init.d/polipo start

Configure

You can configure Polipo and read the manual on: http://127.0.0.1:8123/. To use Polipo in your browser, you have to set the proxy server to http://127.0.0.1/ (port 8123).
