SUSE Linux is a Linux distribution originally based in Germany that was purchased by Novell in 2004. There are two versions of SUSE: the community-supported OpenSUSE and Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise line (SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server.) OpenSUSE is freely available for download whereas SLED is $50 per seat. The current version of OpenSUSE is 10.1 and the enterprise versions are at 10. All SUSE variants are binary distributions and come on either 5 CDs or a DVD. SUSE is famous for its extensive graphical configuration system called YaST (Yet another System Tool) and has historically been a KDE-centric distribution that is full-featured and stable but not exceedingly lightweight or fast. Novell has now migrated the enterprise versions of SUSE to Gnome and has improved the speed quite a bit from older releases.
