Error loading smc-ultra module using modprobe

An error may occur during system initialization when an attempt is made to load the smc-ultra network card module into the kernel:

modprobe smc-ultra
smc-ultra.c Presently autoprobing (not recommended) for a single card
pnp: Unable to assign resources to device 01:01.00.
smc-ultra.c: No SMC Ultra card found (i/o: 0x0)
FATAL: Error inserting smc_ultra (/lib/modules/2.6.19-gentoo-r5/kernel/drivers/net/smc-ultra.ko):
No such device or address

The solution is to configure the following parameter in the system BIOS plug and play setup:

PNP OS Installed: No
