Gentoo Linux on a Sony Vaio VGN-S18GP

Current Status

Video

Lots of people have had problems with this, so, let me give you a quick runthrough - the card type is a Radeon Mobility 9200 M9+ (bit of a mouthful).

You can see the card using lspci thusly:

These 2 pieces of information lead us to our kernel config. When doing make menuconfig, go to the following section:

Then scroll down and enable /dev/agpgart (AGP support). I had to build this into the kernel, not enable it as a module, otherwise my hardware acceleration failed to work.

Just below this, you need to enable your chipset type, as per what you found in lspci above (the 2nd lspci we did).

In this case it is: Intel 440LX/BX/GX, I8xx and E7x05 chipset support. This also needs to be compiled into the kernel. Note ATI chipset is not required here.


Finally, a little bit further down on in the same section, enable your card driver.

First, enable, Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support)

Then, below this, enable ATI Radeon, as a module is fine. (Note: if you want to use the proprietry drivers, you don't need to enable this, but, doing so won't hurt as long as you do it as a module).

Doing this in conjunction with my xorg.conf should have you fired up nicely with a resolution of 1280x800 (this laptop's maximum) and hardware acceleration.

To check it is all working, do:

$ glxinfo | grep direct

and you should see:

direct rendering: Yes


I just fired up glxgears under gnome with very little else running and got the following numbers:

5004 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1000.800 FPS
5381 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1076.200 FPS
5387 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1077.400 FPS

Not too shabby :)

If you have a similar card (most of the ATI range of cards as far as I know) exactly the same procedure should work. You will need to change the screen resolution in the xorg.conf file below (just the line that says 1280x80), and, I would recommend commenting out the following lines and enabling them one by one:

    VideoRam         32768

    Option          "EnablePageFlip"  "on"

Once you get that far, try increasing AGPMode until your machine stops working.

You should make sure you do rc-update del xdm default before you do this testing because there is a good chance you will get your X config in a state that will hang your machine every time it starts.

If you want to go with the proprietry drivers:

# emerge ati-drivers

and get rid of the following section

    VideoRam         32768
    Option          "AGPMode"  "1"
    Option          "AGPFastWrite"  "on"
    Option          "EnablePageFlip"  "on"


I found the following disadvantages with the proprietry drivers:

Sound

Ok - sound was a bit of a bitch for a while, you need to be careful not to have other drivers lying around that will "get in the way".

The oss drivers will not work and will stop the ALSA ones working.

If you compile all the ALSA drivers, the intel-i810m will load (for the winmodem, but it doesn't do anything) and prevent your soundcard working.

First let's have a look at our sound card:

The easiest way I found to get it going was to do the following:

  1. In your kernel config go to the following section:
    • Device Drivers --->
      • Sound --->
  2. And enable Sound card support, but make sure both Advanced Linux Sound Architecture and Open Soumd System are disabled.
  3. When you have booted with your new kernel, check that the /usr/src/linux symlink is pointing to the correct kernel sources
  4. Check your /etc/make.conf and make sure "oss" is in the USE flags - this will make sure that the alsa-driver ebuild will include the oss compatability layer which gnome (and I assume others) seem to need to use.
  5. Add the following line to your make.conf
ALSA_CARDS="intel8x0"

That last bit will ensure that you don't build any drivers you don't want that could potentially get in the way.

Finally

# emerge alsa-driver

then, make sure your sound modules load every time you boot

# rc-update add alsasound default

then start alsasound (which loads the modules you have just compiled)

# /etc/init.d/alsasound start

And, voila, your sound should be up and running.


Now you can test it:

# cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp

You should be hearing some static type noise, but you probably won't because the volume is turned down.

You now have 2 choices (probably more, but 2 that I have played with) to get the volume turned up.

# emerge gnome-alsamixer

Then start gnome-alsamixer and do the following, with the cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp still running in a shell somewhere.

  1. Turn up the Master volume a bit
  2. Turn the PCM volume up to full (just use the master volume for volume control unless you have a special reason not to)
  3. Check or uncheck the External Amplifier box. I used to have to leave it unchecked, not it seems to need to be checked - go figure.


If you don't use gnome, then you can do much the same thing with alsamixer which is in the alsautils ebuild

# emerge alsa-utils

The start alsamixer

$ alsamixer

And do the following with cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp running in another window/console

  1. Turn up the Master volume (arrow keys) and make sure it is not muted (m key)
  2. Turn up the PCM volume and make sure it isn't muted
  3. Go to the right as far as External and toggle the muting status on that with the m key (as above, sometimes I seem to need this to be muted and sometimes I need it not to be.
  4. Rinse, lather, repeat until you sound starts coming out

Power management

A very easy way is to emerge acpid and cpufreq, which will reduce the frequency of your cpu depending on its use. You should add smartdimmer in order to control your screen and save a bit more battery.
